VASCULAR SURGERY
Vascular surgery deals with
diagnosis and therapy of diseases which affect blood vessels (arteries, veins, lymphatic system).
The
arterial system comprises a series of channels that distribute oxygenated blood from the heart into all parts of the body.
The
venous system runs parallel to the arterial system, bringing blood back to the heart: the lymphatic system comes into play in this process.
Each system can be affected by disease, for example, the arterial system is affected mainly by
arteriosclerosis, the venous system by
thrombosis and/or
phlebitis and
varicose veins. The lymphatic system is affected by processes of obstruction, which can create a
lymph oedema.

LYMPHATIC SYSTEM
The lymphatic system is made up of tiny vessels along which lymph nodes are located at intervals like stations (lymph glands). These nodes contain a clear liquid called lymph, which is rich in protein. The most common pathology in this system is a swelling known as lymph oedema. The swelling can attain considerable proportions, as in elephantiasis. It may be congenital or acquired (radiation therapy etc.) ...
